As described in the syllabus, the "Mini Media Projects" are worth a total of 200 points. Read all instructions before beginning and plan carefully. Option 1: Write a News Story For this option you are to write a news story as covered in the lecture post "SocietyMassCom: How Write a News Story (W9-P3) Fa17." Your story should have a headline, byline, a lead, backup for the lead, impact, background, elaboration and ending. Total words (not including the headline and byline) should be between 250 to 350 words in length. Start this assignment by first going to this link to find an interesting news-related photograph. Use this photograph to write your news story. For the purposes of this class assignment, you will be making up the facts for the news story. For example, make up names for the people and places in the photograph. You will be making up quotes and other details as well. Put the photograph and the news story in a Word document. The document should be 1 page with the photograph and the news story on the same page. Use single space. Adjust margins and size of photograph as needed. Save the Word document in PDF format* and email the PDF version to Dr. Hart's NSU email address from your NSU email address. Do not email the Word document. You may want to CC a copy to another of your email accounts. Do not delete any of the emails related to this assignment. The email should have "Write a News Story" as the subject line. Option 2: Take/Compose Photographs For this option you are to take 5 photographs using the rules of composition found in the lecture post "SocietyMassCom: Photo Composition (W11-P1) Fa17." Each photograph should use a different rule of composition. The photographs should show examples of the rule of simplicity, the rule of thirds, the rule of lines, the rule of balance and the rule of framing. Note that in lecture only simplicity, rule of thirds and framing were covered. See the link in the lecture post for information on the other two rules. Along with each photograph give a written explanation (50 words minimum) that clearly explains how you used the rule of composition to compose your photograph. In your written explanation start with a definition of the rule used and then explain how your photograph is a good example of the use of that rule. Put the photographs and the written explanations in a Word document. The document should be 5 pages total. Each page should include a photograph and the written explanation below the photograph. The photographs should be large enough to clearly see the aspects of the photograph that you write about. Save the Word document in PDF format* and email the PDF version to Dr. Hart's NSU email address from your NSU email address. Do not email the Word document. You may want to CC a copy to another of your email accounts. Do not delete any of the emails related to this assignment. The email should have "Compose Photographs" as the subject line. If the PDF file is too large to email, then break the assignment into more than one PDF document and submit the multiple documents. Option 3: Write a Film Treatment For this option you are to write a film treatment using the information covered in lecture posts "SocietyMassCom: Writing a Screenplay - Plot Structure (W11-P3) Fa17" and "SocietyMassCom: Writing a Screenplay - Campbell & Character Types (W11-P4) Fa17." The treatment should first cover the plot by clearly indicating what will happen in each act. The plot description should be 200 words minimum. Next, cover the main characters in your film by explaining how your characters fit into Campbell's character types. The character description should be 200 words minimum. Write the treatment (plot and character descriptions) in a Word document. The document should be 1 page. Use single space. Adjust margins as needed. Save the Word document in PDF format* and email the PDF version to Dr. Hart's NSU email address from your NSU email address. Do not email the Word document. You may want to CC a copy to another of your email accounts. Do not delete any of the emails related to this assignment. The email should have "Write a Film Treatment" as the subject line. Further Instructions The total possible points for this assignment are 200 (100 for each option). The work you submit should be your own original work for this assignment and should be free of grammatical and spelling errors. Submit the two options you chose by noon on November 28th. Submit them together, that is, email them within 5 minutes of each other. Earn extra credit for submitting the work early. For each day early earn 2 extra credit points for up to a total of 20 extra credit points. The assignments must be submitted together to be consider as extra credit. Note: This assignment should help you on Exam 3 if these topics are covered on that exam. * This video link is an example of how to save a Word document to PDF format. How you actually do that may vary. Plan ahead. |
